چکیده

Introduction: We have obtained multiple contemporaneous ground and space-based visible and hyperspectral infrared observations of a persistent active lava lake, one of the rarest volcanonological phenomenon. This unique dataset advances our understanding of remote sensing of lava lake activity on Earth and Io. The Mt. Erebus lava lake: Active lava lakes are the top of an open magma system and provide a view into the magma supply and circulation process in volcanic conduits. Such features are currently found at Erta’Ale, Ethiopia; Nyiragongo, Democratic Republic of Congo; and at Mt. Erebus, on Ross Island, Antarctica. The latter, the world’s southernmost active volcano, is the focus of this study.

Observations and temperatures of Io’s Pele Patera from Cassini and Galileo spacecraft images

Pele has been the most intense high-temperature hotspot on Io to be continuously active during the Galileo monitoring from 1996–2001. A suite of characteristics suggests that Pele is an active lava lake inside a volcanic depression. In 2000–2001, Pele was observed by two spacecraft, Cassini and Galileo. The Cassini observations revealed that Pele is variable in activity over timescales of minut...

Thermal signature, eruption style, and eruption evolution at Pele and Pillan on Io

The Galileo spacecraft has been periodically monitoring volcanic activity on Io since June 1996, making it possible to chart the evolution of individual eruptions. We present results of coanalysis of Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) and solidstate imaging (SSI) data of eruptions at Pele and Pillan, especially from a particularly illuminating data set consisting of mutually constraining...

Sulfur Degassing from Mt. Erebus Volcano, Antarctica

SO2 emission rates from Erebus volcano show periodicity, which directly relates to lava lake convection and magma and conduit processes. Mt. Erebus is a 3794 m stratovolcano with a persistently degassing convecting, phonolite lava lake. Lava lake SO2 emission rates were collected from 1992 to 2003 using the correlation spectrometer (COSPEC) and in 2003 and 2005 using a miniature ultra-violet di...

Plankton diversity and aquatic ecology of a freshwater lake (L3) at Bharti Island, Larsemann Hills, east Antarctica

The Larsemann Hills range is an ice-free oasis on the Ingrid Christensen Coast of Princess Elizabeth Land, East Antarctica, which includes Bharti Island, Fisher Island, McLeod Island, Broknes Peninsula, Stornes Peninsula, and several other islands, promontories, and nunataks. The Larsemann Hills is an ice-free area of approximately 50 km2, located halfway between the Vestfold Hills a...
